Intensive English Program

When applying to enter the Arab Open University, all applicants are required to sit for the University's Placement Test, which evaluates their English proficiency. In the event of a lower-than-required score to allow for the immediate commencement of study, students are automatically placed in what are called EL98 and EL99.

EL 098 represents a beginner level and EL 099 is considered the elementary one. At both levels, students are taught the communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing together with the functions, notions and grammar in an integrated syllabus that aims at beginners and those students who have some basic knowledge of English but little confidence to use it. It builds skills and confidence through a balanced mix of language work and practice.

Program Objectives

The primary aim is to improve the basic spoken and written skills of students to a level of proficiency that will enable them to progress to the Intermediate Level. Upon completion of the Beginner and Elementary courses, students are expected to be able to understand and communicate in the spoken language within the framework of the relationships, topics and settings of the syllabus.

Syllabus Main Features

Integrated skills work is an important feature of the course.
Grammatical structures are introduced in context, with questions that encourage students
to work out the rules for themselves.
A well-defined vocabulary syllabus concentrates on three key areas: learning new words in
lexical sets; acquiring good habits for learning vocabulary; and developing vocabulary
'systems' such as sound and spelling relationships.
Workbooks at each level offer a range of exercises to revise and extend the grammar and
vocabulary covered in the Student's Book.
Interactive CD and on ine practice.
